Oregano essential oil is distilled from the leaves of Origanum vulgare and is one of the most potent oils in aromatherapy. Its dominant compound, carvacrol (up to 80%), gives it exceptionally strong antibacterial and antifungal activity. This same potency makes it a significant skin and mucous membrane irritant — it must be used at very low dilutions and handled with care.
